St Peter's Square

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is building a brand new Metrolink route through Manchester city centre – the Second City Crossing (2CC). As part of this project the St Peter’s Square stop is being completely transformed. The existing stop has been demolished and a brand new stop – with two platforms and four lines – is being built closer to the Art Gallery. All this work will mean more trams and more frequent services through the city than ever before. The new St Peter’s Square stop location will also make room for improvements to public and pedestrian areas to complement Manchester City Council’s exciting flagship redevelopment of the square.

Metrolink service changes

We are working to reduce disruption where possible while work takes place to build the brand new St Peter’s Square Stop. For most of the work we’ll be keeping trams running through the city so you can still travel by Metrolink from one side of the city to the other. There will be changes to services through to late 2016 when the stop reopens. Changes to services will take place in three phases:

  • Phase 1 (28 June 2015 to 28 August 2015). Is now complete.
  • Phase 2 (started 28 August for ten months). Trams have resumed running through St Peter's Square, though the stop itself will remain closed until autumn 2016. The following services are now running:
    • Altrincham to Etihad (Piccadilly on Sundays), 12-minute service with double trams.
    • Altrincham to Deansgate-Castlefield, 12-minute service with single trams.
    • Bury to Piccadilly, 12-minute service with single trams.
    • Bury to East Didsbury, 12-minute service with double trams.
    • Eccles-MediaCityUK to Piccadilly, 12-minute service with double trams.
    • Rochdale to Ashton-Under-Lyne, 12-minute service with single and double trams.
    • Manchester Airport to Cornbrook, 12-minute with single and double trams

  • Phase 3 (final eight weeks, summer 2016). The same as Phase 1 – no services will run through the St Peter’s Square stop as work finishes to open the new-look stop to passengers in autumn 2016. For customers travelling on the Altrincham, Manchester Airport, East Didsbury, Eccles and MediaCityUK lines, the newly revamped Deansgate-Castlefield will offer the best city centre stop. Services on all other lines will run into Piccadilly.

City centre travel options

There are a number of travel options to help passengers get across the city centre easily during the St Peter’s Square works. Use our sign-posted step-free walking route or the new and improved free Metroshuttle service.

For a step-free walking route please download our walking route map here.

The free city centre Metroshuttle buses run on three routes linking key transport interchanges and NCP car parks with shopping and business areas. New routes were introduced at the beginning of June offering frequent, improved services for Metrolink passengers to get across the city, with direct links to Metrolink stops at Shudehill Interchange and Piccadilly and Victoria stations.

Metroshuttles are easy to use, they operate on three circular routes so just hop on and off as often as you like. To see when and where the three routes run to please visit the Metroshuttle page of the TfGM website. The hours of operation are below.

Works information

  • The stop is now closed through to late 2016 and the work is being carried out in three phases.
  • During the first phase, no trams ran through the square as we constructed track for a single line running on Lower Mosley Street and within the square.
  • Since the 28 August trams have been running through St Peter’s Square whilst we demolish the existing Metrolink infrastructure and construct the new stop. This will continue for 10 months until summer 2016.
  • During summer 2016, there will be a further 8 week period when Metrolink will not run through the square, as the final construction and track works are carried out.
  • Once the works are complete in autumn 2016, the new stop will open to passengers and Metrolink services stopping at the square will resume.
  • Works will continue to construct the new Second City Crossing line until 2017. Once complete, this will enable more services to run through the city centre.
